In very difficult conditions a brave group of participants gathered at the start for this year’s Southern Charity Challenge.
No pain, no gain seemed to be the common statement heard all along the south coast on Sunday as walkers, and joggers participated in the 8th Southern Charity Challenge. Thankfully the pain was their own while the gain was for charity.
The Southern Charity Challenge was run in 4 sections this year with the 15km walk from Goolwa to Victor Harbor being a popular and well supported distance. However the 21.1km half marathon event attracted record numbers this year but it was the 35km and 60km courses to Back Valley via the Bluff which were the most demanding.
The Bell family from Genesis Tour and Charter generously assisted with a free courtesy bus to Goolwa for participants with over 60 people registering for a pick up at Yilki or Victor Harbor.
The start line was a frenzy of cold bodies seeking any possible option to keep warm including some in garbage bags. However the rain and wind early in the day did not diminish the enthusiasm of participants with most participants appreciating the cool, overcast conditions.
The first individual jogger to complete the half marathon was Mathew Kinsele in 1hr29mins. Mathew was closely tagged by Andrew Fraterman with Markus Gebaeur not far off the pace.
Locals dominated entries in the long course trail running events. Phil Keen set a solid pace in the half marathon to be only minutes of the leaders but then ran straight through and kept heading toward the Bluff and Back Valley. Phil finished the demanding 35km course in a course record of 3hours&14mins.
The 60km course is a demanding course with beach walking, several significant hills and then rugged bush sections. Teams were thankful for clear skies and cool conditions while walking the demanding course.
The first team over the line in the 60km event were local trail running team Paul Black and Seal Yates. This amazing couple completed the 60km course before many 35km teams in a great time of 7hours&4mins.
The last long distance last team dragged themselves over the line in 11hrs&30mins, tired but still laughing and telling jokes.
The Southern Charity Challenge was run by Brad Butler as a volunteer with teams gaining sponsorship for charity. All proceeds from the fundraising efforts of individuals are directed to Oxfam Australia.
